What Are Road Studs? A Complete Overview

Road studs, also known as reflective road markers, play a crucial role in road safety. These devices enhance visibility during nighttime and adverse weather conditions. By supplementing road markings with retro-reflective materials, road studs help drivers stay on course and navigate safely.

Types of Road Studs and Their Applications

1. Types of Road Studs

Road studs come in various types, each designed for specific applications:

  • Plastic Road Studs: Made from durable plastic with reflectors, these studs are suitable for all types of roads. They come with an abrasion-resistant coating and can be bonded to the road surface using epoxy or bitumen adhesives, depending on the manufacturer’s recommendations.
  • Uni-Directional Road Studs: Used on one-way streets, undivided roads, and slip roads. These studs guide drivers in a single direction.
  • Bi-Directional Road Studs: Suitable for two-way roads, these studs delineate the center line and edge lines, ensuring clear guidance for both directions.

2. Placement of Road Studs

Proper placement of road studs is essential for maximum effectiveness:

  • On Broken Markings: Place road studs in the center of gaps in longitudinal markings. Avoid placing them on the line segment or alongside it.
  • On Paved Shoulders: For roads with paved shoulders, position the studs outside the shoulder edge line, 50 mm back from the edge line. In cases where there is no paved shoulder, place the studs on the edge line.
  • On Median Side Edges: Ensure road studs are not placed on the median line marking. Instead, position them in the hard strip or curb area, with at least a 50 mm setback from the median side edge line and a minimum of 100 mm clearance from the vertical face of the raised curb. This prevents accumulation of mud and dust.
  • Flushed or Depressed Medians: In these cases, the 100 mm clearance is not required. A 50 mm setback from the median side edge line will suffice.
  • Edge Lines: Road studs with anchorages are preferred for edge lines. Ensure proper installation to avoid damaging the pavement structure, although anchorages are not recommended for concrete roads.

Color Coding for Road Studs

Road studs are available in various colors, each serving a specific purpose:

  • White: Indicates traffic lane lines and the center of the carriageway.
  • Red: Marks lines that should not be crossed and delineates the left-hand edge of the running carriageway. They can be replaced with green studs at entry points to truck lay-byes or service roads.
  • Yellow: Used to indicate lines that should not be crossed, typically marking the right-hand edge of multi-lane divided carriageways.
  • Green: Indicates crossable edge lines such as lay-byes and shows the boundary of acceleration or deceleration lines on the left-hand side of multi-lane carriageways.

Conclusion

Understanding the types, placement, and color coding of road studs is essential for improving road safety and visibility. Proper use of these markers ensures a safer driving experience, especially under challenging conditions.
